MTH 4772: Number Theory with Cryptography

Description

Structure of the integers, prime factorization, congruences, multiplicative functions, primitive roots and quadratic reciprocity, and selected applications including cryptography.

Prerequisites

MTH 3002 with a grade C or better

Textbook

  • Rational points on elliptic curves, J. Silverman and J. Tate
  • Grading

    Homework will be assigned and occasionally will be collected to be graded. The following chart will be used to determine your grade:

  • Midterm I: 20 %
  • Midterm II: 20 %
  • Midterm III: 20 %
  • Final 40 %

  • Grades will be determined with the following scale:

  • 94-100: A
  • 90-93: A-
  • 87-89: B+
  • 84-86: B
  • 80-83: B-
  • 77-79: C+
  • 73-76: C
  • 70-72: C-
  • 67-69: D+
  • 63-66: D
  • 60-62: D-
  • 59: F
